The United States Department of Justice has officially requested that a federal judge compel Google to sell its Chrome web browser, a move that could fundamentally reshape the digital advertising and search landscape. In a court filing submitted late Wednesday, antitrust prosecutors argued that divestiture is the only way to restore competition in the search market, where Google currently holds a dominant position. The proposal also includes measures to prevent Google from using its Android operating system to favor its own search engine. Google has vowed to appeal the decision, labeling the government's approach as a 'radical overreach' that would harm consumer privacy and stifle innovation. Legal analysts suggest that while the filing marks a historic milestone in tech regulation, a final resolution remains years away as the case moves through the appellate process. Judge Amit Mehta is scheduled to begin hearings on the proposed remedies in early 2025.
